Before You Call: A Customer’s Checklist When Evaluating AC Repairs

Home | Blog | Published on August 25th, 2025

There’s nothing worse than a hot summer day and an air conditioning system that won’t cooperate, especially with our Charleston heat. Before you pick up the phone to schedule a service call, there are several quick, safe steps you can take to troubleshoot your air conditioner. Sometimes, the issue is something simple that homeowners can handle on their own. Taking a few minutes to check these basics could save you both time and money.

Check the Thermostat

Start with the easiest fix: the thermostat. Make sure it’s set to “cool” and that the temperature is set lower than the current room temperature. If your thermostat uses batteries, replace them to rule out a power issue. For smart or programmable thermostats, confirm that the schedule hasn’t been accidentally adjusted.

Inspect the Air Filter

A dirty air filter can cause airflow problems, making your system work harder—or even shut down. Remove the filter and hold it up to the light. If little or no light passes through, it’s time to replace it. Ideally, filters should be replaced every 1–3 months during peak cooling season.

Ensure the Power Supply Is On

If the AC won’t start, check your circuit breaker panel. A tripped breaker may be the only issue. Reset it once, but if it trips again, do not force it—this could indicate a larger electrical problem that requires a professional. Also, look near the indoor unit for a power switch that may have been flipped off accidentally.

Inspect the Outdoor Unit

Go outside and take a look at the condenser unit. Clear away any leaves, grass clippings, or debris that may be blocking airflow. Trim back plants or bushes to allow at least two feet of space around the unit. Also, check that the fan is running when the system is on. If it’s not, that could be a sign of a mechanical issue that requires service.

Check the Air Vents

Walk through your home to make sure vents are open and unobstructed. Furniture, rugs, or curtains can block airflow, making it feel like your AC isn’t cooling properly. Closing too many vents can also create pressure imbalances that strain your system.

Look for Signs of Ice or Water

If you notice ice buildup on your indoor coil or outdoor unit, turn off the AC immediately. This can happen from restricted airflow or low refrigerant, and running the system while frozen can cause serious damage. Similarly, check for water pooling around your indoor unit—clogged condensate drains are a common culprit and may be cleared with a wet/dry vacuum.

Restart the System

Sometimes a simple reset is all that’s needed. Turn off the thermostat, wait about five minutes, and then turn it back on. This allows the system to reset its internal controls and may resolve minor glitches.

When to Call a Professional

If your AC still isn’t cooling after these checks, it’s time to call a licensed technician. Persistent problems like warm air blowing from vents, strange noises, or electrical issues require expert diagnosis and repair.

By tackling these safe, DIY-friendly steps first, you might solve the problem without a service call—or at the very least, provide valuable information to your HVAC technician, helping them resolve the issue more efficiently.
